The weather is colder now and the days are shorter, but you still need to take advantage of the beautiful North Carolina outdoor life whenever possible. Fresh air and sunshine are essential to good health. Natural sunlight on the skin triggers the body’s natural production of vitamin D, or “The sunshine vitamin.” Vitamin D is a crucial ingredient for overall health; protects against inflammation, lowers high blood pressure, helps muscles, improves brain function and may even protect against cancer. Exposure to sunlight also has a huge effect on depression and sleep disorders. It also has a direct association with weight loss.
Fresh air is also fundamental is maintaining good health. Fresh air cleans the lungs and helps to bring more oxygen to the cells and improves the cleansing action of your lungs. When you exhale, you release airborne toxins from your body. The increased oxygen level in the body brings with it increased energy to keep you going! Though any exercise is better than no exercise, it is proven that getting out into the fresh air is far beneficial. Staying inside results in breathing the same stale air, filled with shared germs, and depleted oxygen levels. If you are breathing in stale air, you may see an increase in certain health problems such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, fatigue and exhaustion, irritability, anxiety, depression, frequent fevers, colds, or lung diseases.
While fresh air and sunshine in the winter months is invigorating and healthy, it also can be harsh on your skin. There are a few things however that you can do to keep your skin health too!
Whether is for a leisurely family stroll or an intense morning workout, being out side is the healthy choice. Exposure to the sunlight has too many benefits to pass up, and it is proven that it just makes you happier!
